If you look closely, the emperor depicted in this painting does not look like the Xuande Emperor because it was not painted during the Xuande Era. This is actually a painting depicting the Jiajing Emperor or Ming Shih-tsung (1522-1566). A more detailed description of the event can be found in a book written by Na Chih-Liang entitled The Emperor's Procession Two Scrolls Of The Ming Dynasty. It was published in 1970 by the National palace Museum in Taiwan where this painting is currently housed.
