William Utermohlen (1933–2007) was an American figurative artist known for his late period self-portraits completed after his 1995 diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). During his illness, he made a series of self-portraits influenced in part by the figurative painter Francis Bacon and cinematographers from the German Expressionism movement. Born in South Philadelphia, Utermohlen earned a scholarship at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA) in 1951. After completing military service, he studied in Europe where he was inspired by Renaissance and Baroque artists. He moved to London in 1962 and married the art historian Patricia Redmond in 1965. He relocated to Massachusetts in 1972 teach art at Amherst College before returning to London in 1975. Since his 2007 death at age 73, his late works have gained renown. His self-portraits especially are seen as important in the understanding of the gradual effects of AD and how cognitive and visual pathways interact. (Full article...)
- Wehwalt I haven't yet corrected this in the article, since it is a problem throughout and there is too much to correct, but the correct diagnosis is probable Alzheimer's disease, per the original case report (PMID 11445128) upon which all other sources are based but misstated the diagnosis. The diagnoses of AD are "probable" or "possible" (and also were at the time of his evaluation and diagnosis). A definitive diagnosis of Alzheimer's requires autopsy findings, and a big problem with this article is it outright assumes the connection between AD and his art, without qualification, although the original case report was more correct and as far as I can tell, there was no autopsy. Also, "in 1972 to teach art" (a sample of the copyedit needs in this article that led to my oppose). The "cognitive and visual pathways interact" is too close paraphrasing of the source, which drew that conclusion in reference to a number of conditions, not Utermohlen specifically, and an overstatement of what the source supports, and probably not at all clear to the layreader-- another issue I raised in my oppose. The article needs a thorough copyedit, but also attention from editors who understand dementia diagnoses and an eye towards WP:UNDUE. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 16:57, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
- Gog, who is scheduling August, listed a few articles that are at FAC on the assumption they will pass. I did a draft blurb for four of the articles they listed for August. I have nothing to do with the FAC of that article. If it passes, feel free to edit the draft blurb either here or at the TFA day page, if it does not, Gog will no doubt schedule something else.--Wehwalt (talk) 17:38, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
