Palmyra is an ancient city in present-day Homs Governorate, Syria. Inhabited since the Neolithic period, it entered recorded history in the early second millennium BC. Palmyra became part of the Roman Empire in the first century AD. Palmyrene merchants established colonies along the Silk Road and the city grew wealthy from trade caravans. Many monumental projects were erected, such as the Great Colonnade, the Temple of Bel, and distinctive tower tombs. Palmyra reached the apex of its power in the 260s, when its king Odaenathus defeated the Persian emperor Shapur I. After Odaenathus's assassination in 267, his widow Zenobia rebelled against Rome and conquered the Roman East. Palmyra was destroyed in 273 by the Roman emperor Aurelian. Restored on a smaller scale, it remained a minor trading center until it was sacked by the Timurids in 1400 and became a small village. During the Syrian Civil War in 2015, large parts of the ancient city were destroyed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. (Full article...)
Attar-Aram syria (and anyone else interested): thoughts and edits are welcome. There's no rush; this hasn't been scheduled at TFA yet. This batch finishes up blurbs for FACs promoted in 2016. - Dank (push to talk) 01:03, 19 January 2020 (UTC)
- I edited the text. Palmyra is known today mostly because of Zenobia and her rebellion, so this needed to be mentioned, which will also explain why Aurelian destroyed the city. Hope the characters limit is okay.--Attar-Aram syria (talk) 16:16, 20 January 2020 (UTC)
- Good point. Down to "Roman East", it looks fine ... after that it falls apart a little bit, give it another shot. - Dank (push to talk) 16:55, 20 January 2020 (UTC)
- Looks good now, thanks. - Dank (push to talk) 19:43, 20 January 2020 (UTC)
- Attar-Aram syria, I think there's a potential misreading in the last sentence ... everyone knew who the Islamic State was in 2015, but they've been out of the news cycle for a while ... some readers will think we're talking about the Islamic state that we just mentioned ... namely, Syria. We could just say "was destroyed" and not mention the Islamic State, or we could use a different name ... thoughts? - Dank (push to talk) 03:12, 23 February 2020 (UTC)

- MOS:TERRORIST says not to use "terrorist". - Dank (push to talk) 03:52, 23 February 2020 (UTC)
- We can use the whole name if you like ... it's 1025 characters now. - Dank (push to talk) 03:54, 23 February 2020 (UTC)
- Sounds good (sometimes I get mini strokes from some Wiki policies-like the terrorist thing)--Attar-Aram syria (talk) 04:22, 23 February 2020 (UTC)
