Spotchecking the Spanish language sources

[edit]

Per Nikkimaria request, setting up this section on talk for what I gather is a request for a thorough review of the Spanish-language sources ... will get to it bit by bit. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 01:51, 10 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I have added |trans-title= for some of the Spanish language sources to give readers an idea of what the source is about. I see there are a lot of sources to review here, so it would help if the nominator would add the rest of the |trans-title= parameters. There are also multiple instances of curly quotes or double quotes within quotes that should be single quotes. Also, see El Universal, there are many. El Universal (Mexico City) should be specified to distinguish from, for example, El Universal in Caracas, and many other places. I added one, but there are others. Sample edits, adjustments needed throughout. I will chip away at checking these sources over the next few days. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 02:32, 10 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hurricane Noah for future reference, one of the things you might do is link these lesser known sources to our article on them where we have one. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 20:50, 10 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Stopping for now, will chip away at this as I have time, but see the issues so far raised, and in the interest of saving time, please try to look for similar before I do. Best, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 21:35, 10 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

To check

[edit]

I'll be checking for source-to-text integrity, reliability of sources, accuracy in translation, and avoidance of too close paraphrasing (keep in mind that exact translations are plagiarism). SandyGeorgia (Talk) 19:28, 10 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Ealdgyth and Nikkimaria: could one of you point us at that handy-dandy page that one of you has somewhere that explains how to address my reliability queries? Thx, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 20:11, 10 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Reliable

I cannot locate any "About us" information for diariobasta or https://grupocanton.com/ ... what makes them a reliable source?

Article says: "The line was fully operational by June 15 after the water was drained at one location by four stationary sump pumps, four mobile pumps, and two emergency teams. Another point was cleared by eight mobile pumps." All checks out. But, I suggest the excess detail about number of pumps and number of teams is not needed here (after water was drained by emergency teams with pumps). If that is done, then I don't see the need to worry about how highly reliable this source is, although it may be possible to find that the Line was fully operational by June 15 in a better quality source. The detail provided by this source just does not seem necessary. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 16:39, 11 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I cannot find any page indicating editorial oversight for Diario de Mexico; what makes them a reliable source?

Cannot determine reliability because https://www.diarioelindependiente.mx/quienes-somos is a dead link; they do have a staff page at https://www.diarioelindependiente.mx/ver-directorio

Reliable

I cannot locate any About Us page for El Informante; what makes them a reliable source?

I cannot locate an About Us page for El Nuevo Diario; what makes them reliable?

El Sol de Acapulco

Marginal: their About Us page is only a privacy policy https://www.elsoldeacapulco.com.mx/info/quienes-somos/ but they do have a staff directory https://www.elsoldeacapulco.com.mx/info/directorio/ and contact info, so I will look at what is being sourced.

Article says: "Heavy rainfall from Bud caused the waters of the Laguna Negra of Puerto Marques to become contaminated with sewage, which in turn sparked a die-off of at least four fish species." This is an overstatement of what the source says (may be a consequence of possible contamination from sewage discharges). And the source is marginal. And the source is stating one person's speculation. A stronger source for this claim might be better. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 17:47, 12 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Article says: "Businessmen in the resort town of Pie de la Cuesta requested that Fonden, the National Disaster Relief Fund, be activated due to the damage sustained as a result of the storm. Approximately 123 businesses suffered losses and infrastructural damage after strong waves compromised the stability of the sand the buildings were on. The waves swept away furniture and almost killed a family after short-circuiting electrical components." Per the text of the source of June 11 (yesterday from June 12 publication) as of date needed on the number of businesses affected. Also, the 123 comes from the president of the local Chamber of Commerce; since the source is marginal, that should be attributed (the president of the local Chamber of Commerce stated that approximately 123 businesses ... ) Not a big concern, but the paraphrasing is a wee bit close on this and might be improved to avoid too-close. Reliable, but another one that should be disambiguated per El Tiempo (Colombia) and El Tiempo

El Universal

Reliable, but should always be disambiguated per El Universal

Expansion.mx

I can't determine what this site is, what makes it reliable, and why some of the citations indicate it is somehow related to CNN, while others don't. I find no "about us" page, and can't understand the relationship to CNN. https://expansion.mx/nacional/ SandyGeorgia (Talk) 19:19, 10 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I found something from a company's profile on Expansion here. It also appears CNN owned/partnered with them in the past (they still may be partnered) [1] and [2]. here, they discuss their history and the partnership with CNN. They claim to have been sold by CNN to another group and thus why the [CNNExpansion.com] domain redirects to the current expansion.com. I found an archived version which supports they are the same site. I guess I kind of fudged up the relations a bit on these refs, but I found out what it was now. NoahTalk 20:08, 10 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
From the one piece of text I've checked so far (double cited to CNN and expansion), it does appear that expansion is a mirror of CNN, so likely somehow affiliated. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 21:43, 10 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I can only find a staff page for expreso, https://www.expreso.com.mx/otros/directorio.html which is not inspiring, as it says nothing about reporters ... convince me how reliability is determined on them?

List 2

El Heraldo needs to be disambiguated or location supplied per El Heraldo; the problem is, this one seems to be El Heraldo de Aguascalientes, not El Heraldo de México. Are they associated? They don't seem to be, and I'm not finding About Us information.

I cannot find an About Us page for Proceso, but it seems to be Proceso (magazine). Can find no indication of editorial oversight or staff, and Wikipedia has them with one reporter (?). Will see what this is used to source.
