Wikipedia talk:Contribution Month in Canada 2017
Current Stage The current stage is to find Wikimedians eager to organize an activity, a workshop, a photo hunt, or just go have a drink with other Wikipedians. Then end September, Wikimedia Canada will invite all Canadians to join in events organized by you, Wikimedians. You might also want to consider creating a WikiClub? |
This is the discussion page for the Contribution Month in Canada 2017. Feel free to ask any question or post interest in organizing your own contribution days. Discussions en français : fr:Discussion Wikipédia:Mois de la contribution au Canada 2017.
If you are an organizer of an event, please create a new tab in the Google Sheet and copy and fill the tables to report on the results of your event: [1].
Pictou County, Nova Scotia
[edit]I would be happy to arrange an event in New Glasgow. I have good contacts at the public library and am sure space could be made available there. I'm thinking that coal mining in Pictou County might be a good theme and will look into resources available, but am open to other suggestions too. If there is no interest in this area I would join something in Truro, Antigonish and maybe as far as HRM. Derek Andrews (talk) 14:02, 5 September 2017 (UTC)
- Bonjour Derek! Thank you for your interest in the National contribution month. I justadfdsafsdfsdfsdf "under discussion" on the workshops map, so other wikimedians from New Glasgow region can show their interest. As soon as you guys find a room that can fit to organise the workshop, let me know... in October a public announcement will be done, so participants can join your workshop. Thank you again for stepping up. Best regards, Benoit Rochon (talk) 17:26, 6 September 2017 (UTC)
- Derek, I suggest that you contact the library early on and see if they can announce it in their network. It is the best way to have participants. It will most likely be non Wikipedians, but if you are comfortable in teaching how to contribute to new people, this is a great way to get new contributors. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me. Thanks, Amqui (talk) 18:02, 6 September 2017 (UTC)
User:Benoit Rochon, I think you made an error on the map, it should be "NS - New Glasgow" not "NB". Amqui (talk) 18:42, 6 September 2017 (UTC)
- Vielen Dank, Amqui. Benoit Rochon (talk) 20:37, 6 September 2017 (UTC)
- In view of the lack of response I will not be pursuing this further. Derek Andrews (talk) 22:41, 4 October 2017 (UTC)
- Hi Derek. I have enough experience in these atelier to say that the lack of response for organizing a workshop, is not meaning there is no interest in participating. Once you have a space and a date for people to gather, you will federate people. Only one organiser is needed... You?
- Now, Pictou is a red dot on the workshops map, and there's no mention on project page. This is probably why you feel there's no interest. What are the nice spots around? The Northumberland Fisheries Museum? Pictou Academy? One of the churches? Any space could work. Let me know if I can help. Benoit Rochon (talk) 11:29, 8 October 2017 (UTC)
- Finding a space is not a problem. I have tried a public talk before and the only person who turned up was the librarian. I was hoping this event would put me in touch with other Wikipedians in the area and jointly we could get something going, but apparently not.Derek Andrews (talk) 12:42, 8 October 2017 (UTC)

Montréal, Québec
[edit]October 3
[edit]Hello, an activity is scheduled at the Grande Bibliothèque of Montréal on Tuesday, October 3 at 6:30 pm, room 3.120. The event will be broadcast by videoconference for those who can not be present. Best regards, Benoit Rochon (talk) 22:32, 5 September 2017 (UTC)
- Hello, Is any registration required to participate for both events happening in Montreal during October 2017? Julientm (talk) 19:55, 16 September 2017 (UTC)
October 11-14
[edit]Hello, I will be in Montreal on the 11-14 of October and would be interested in taking part in any events happening at this time. Emily Jones
October 18
[edit]Hello, User:Krina invites us to a Wikipedia workshop at the Cinémathèque québécoise, Wednesday October 18 at 6 pm. Visit the project page: fr:Wikipédia:Cinémathèque québécoise. Best regards, Benoit Rochon (talk) 11:52, 8 September 2017 (UTC)
Winnipeg MB
[edit]Anyone interested in setting something up in Winnipeg? I'd be interested to help. Could probably find a connection to a library, or else, we could have it at skullspace. Please contact me on my user page if you are interested in collaborating on this. I am also trying to find out what happened to the Winnipeg contact for the Canada 150 Music grant, does anyone know what happened to her? Tenbergen (talk) 03:32, 6 September 2017 (UTC)
- Hello Tenbergen, thank you for your interest in the Canadian contribution month. I add a red point "under discussion" on the workshops map, so other wikimedians from Winnipeg can show their interest. As soon as you find a room that can fit to organise the workshop, let me know... in October a public announcement will be done, so participants will join your workshop. Thank you. Best regards, Benoit Rochon (talk) 11:56, 8 September 2017 (UTC)
Hi. There will be an event in Winnipeg. The contact person there is now in Toronto, but there is a University of Manitoba person who has taken over the organizing of the music event. I should have a date/time shortly up. --Smallison (talk) 13:20, 10 October 2017 (UTC)
Vancouver, BC
[edit]Vancouver Public Library, Central branch? NikolaiHo☎️ 03:40, 6 September 2017 (UTC)
- Is there anything else planned over the weekend at VPL? I can join in.--Csathya (talk) 23:51, 7 September 2017 (UTC)
- Hello Nikolaiho & Csathya. Thank you for your interest. Just want to let you know that I add a red dot on the workshops map that way, if other Wikimedians from Vancouver are interested to help, they can come here and chat with you. Let me know as soon as you know if Vancouver Public Library accept to lend you a room. Best regards. Benoit Rochon (talk) 18:27, 8 September 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks Benoit Rochon. Will stay on a watch out here for other folks who might respond. My thinking is that we should be able to find a room (~8 members) fairly easily. However, we should get in touch with them now, if we were to look at a larger size. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Csathya (talk • contribs) 20:25, 8 September 2017 (UTC)

- I'm interested. I'll drop in if I can. BTW the meeting rooms at the VPL Central Branch are not reservable in advance, unless you're thinking of the big ones in the basement. Clayoquot (talk | contribs) 05:28, 23 September 2017 (UTC)
- I'm interested. It's easy for me to get anywhere downtown, including the VPL. If we are a small group, I can host around my dining room table, in a condo on North False Creek near the Burrard Bridge. However, I am out of town Oct 11–20. Since tomorrow is the Walk for Reconciliation in Vancouver, let me suggest a theme for Canadian contributions to Wikivoyage: make sure that the Understand section of destination articles includes the First Nations history of the place, so as not to give the impression that a destination was empty before settlers arrived. JimDeLaHunt (talk) 06:25, 24 September 2017 (UTC
- I'm interested. Most places in Vancouver are not far on transit for me. Not too clear on the purpose, but I haven't yet met any other Wikipedia editors. Curiocurio talk) contribs) 00:04, 25 September 2017 (UTC)
- This sounds terrific. I'm on the Sunshine Coast, but will be glad to come into the city to meet with you. If there's time, perhaps you wouldn't mind elucidating some of WP's more subtle capabilities for me that I've been too thick to grasp on my own. – AndyFielding (talk) 05:43, 25 September 2017 (UTC)
Folks shall we sign up for this one? Let's just pick a date and I am sure other logistics can fall in place once the date is finalized. Shall we aim for October 8th, 2017? or October 21st or 22nd? --Kaisertalk (talk) 17:20, 6 October 2017 (UTC)
- I second the suggestion of Kaisertalk to secure a date that many editors can attend and I support October 21st or 22nd as mentioned in the same. The UBC Campus offers many possible venues with many past Editathons happening there.[1][2][3] Mavaddat (talk) 01:23, 15 October 2017 (UTC)
Hello, I would like to join and can provide a space at an office in downtown Vancouver that can support 10 people. Can we please set a date so that I can book the meeting room. Nickboariu 22:27, 9, October 2017 (UTC)
- It seems like there is going to be one in UBC, but the user who is organizing it seems very new and I've never heard about the topic (which is apparently was submitted through AfC but has been declined). Anyone have any more info about this? NikolaiHo☎️ 03:12, 23 October 2017 (UTC)
Ottawa, ON
[edit]I am planning to host a workshop in Ottawa. I did one in French earlier this year with Library and Archives Canada (LAC), I can ask them to host us again. We are also looking to contact the Ottawa Public Library (OPL) for a possible partnership. If anybody is interested in helping, please do not hesitate. Thanks, Amqui (talk) 17:52, 6 September 2017 (UTC)
- I can help out if you'd like. -- Earl Andrew - talk 02:43, 8 September 2017 (UTC)
- Earl Andrew, Thank you, I have sent you an email. Amqui (talk) 17:48, 8 September 2017 (UTC)
- I met with OPL staff this afternoon and they were very receptive to the idea of hosting a workshop in October despite not having the normal 4-6 month lead time required for program submission and planning. A request has been submitted for 22 October and I will post the results once known. Loopy30 (talk) 21:57, 8 September 2017 (UTC)
- OPL has now offered to host us at the main branch on the morning of 21 October. Earl Andrew, that would be great if you (or any other experienced local editors) could be available to help mentor new users that show up. Loopy30 (talk) 01:55, 24 September 2017 (UTC)
- Not a very good time for me; I'd only be available until around 10:45am. -- Earl Andrew - talk 02:13, 24 September 2017 (UTC)

I met with Library and Archives Canada today and they offer a space if it doesn't work out with OPL. Amqui (talk) 23:40, 18 September 2017 (UTC)
- LAC is looking at hosting a workshop for their interested staff, but open to the public. Right now we are looking at the 23 October evening in their main building on Wellington. This is not confirmed yet. Amqui (talk) 13:21, 22 September 2017 (UTC)
Gatineau, QC
[edit]I am looking to organize a workshop in Gatineau, possibly with the Université du Québec en Outaouais (UQO). I am also in contact with Bibliothèques et Archives nationales du Québec Gatineau (BAnQ Gatineau) and they offered to host an event. If anybody is interested in helping, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thanks, Amqui (talk) 17:55, 6 September 2017 (UTC)
Across Canada!
[edit]The Music in Canada @ 150 project is running Canadian music focused edit-a-thons at libraries across Canada during October, including Toronto, Hamilton, Ottawa, Charlottetown, London, Victoria, Regina, Montreal, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Cape Breton and more. We are working on scheduling exact dates, but most will run between October 19th and 23rd. Please see our project page [[2]] for more info and we would love to connect up with contribution month and everyone is most welcome at our events. We are running online training sessions next week and the week after and will also are creating powerpoints and handouts that can be used for editing events. Contact me or leave a note on the project talk page if you'd like to connect.Smallison (talk) 13:47, 11 September 2017 (UTC)
- Hello Smallison and Allanaaaaaaa. It's a good idea to connect Canadian music edit-a-thons with the contribution month in Canada. As soon as you have details on dates & exact locations (addresses) of events, please send a message here, so we can list them and point them on the map. Thank you and have a nice day. Greater Toronto Area (GTA)
[edit]Hi, If anybody is having an event in the GTA I would be interested in joining them. Contact me at my user page Rifaa220 (talk) 13:25, 13 September 2017 (UTC)
I'd be keen on joining as well and would be happy to help organize if a couple people could pitch in! Ysim (talk) 13:32, 22 September 2017 (UTC)
There are several events happening in the GTA in relation to a campaign to add content on Canadian music. You'd be most welcome to join. Knowledge of music is not necessary. --Smallison (talk) 13:41, 10 October 2017 (UTC)
Red Deer, Alberta
[edit]I would like to organize a genealogical wiki contribution event near the end of October in Red Deer, Alberta. The contribution would be of ancestors who are not already on Wikipedia but have. Interesting stories. It could also include towns that might not be on here If they are Canadian ancestors or towns than it might be eligible for a Canada 150 project. I will do the organizing once I know there is not one already planned for Red Deer and have been cleared by this organization.
Lianne Kruger
- You are invited to organize it, there is none planned in Red Deer so far. Thank you, Amqui (talk) 03:14, 5 October 2017 (UTC)
Advertising banner?
[edit]As we are now past "end September", and National Contribution Month is upon us, will Wikimedia Canada be producing a banner, similar to last month's banner calling for event organizers, to invite all Canadian Wikipedia readers to join in events? Loopy30 (talk) 00:38, 4 October 2017 (UTC)
- Yes the banner is on since October 1st. Clear your cache maybe? Benoit Rochon (talk) 14:43, 4 October 2017 (UTC)
- Yes, but the banner is only visible when I am logged in as a Wikipedia user. How do other Canadian readers see the invite? If we want to attract more editors, then asking our readers is the obvious place to start. Loopy30 (talk) 15:14, 4 October 2017 (UTC)
- Nope, the banner is visible by anonymous users too. I can tell because: 1. the check box is checked. 2. the project page gets vandalized by anonymous users! Maybe its a coincidence that you hit the 25 maximum impressions any individual will see? This max is reset every 250,000 seconds (2.9 days). Thank you for your interest Loopy30. Best regards, Benoit Rochon (talk) 10:46, 8 October 2017 (UTC)
