Wikipedia talk:Blocked users can edit their own talk page

Page move
[edit]This page was under the title Wikipedia:New features. However, the only thing that should be decided locally on the English Wikipedia is whether a particular feature should be enabled there. Other requests for enhancement belong on http://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/ (and can also be cataloged at Development tasks, which is currently maintained by the Wikimedia Research Network). So I have moved the page to a more appropriate title.--Eloquence* 00:13, July 15, 2005 (UTC)
- I agree that deciding should not be on this page. I meant it only for announcing the fact that a new feature is now available. So I'll restore the page, with a link to Wikipedia talk:Blocked user edit exceptions. See also Wikipedia:bug reports for a similar re-shufflin.
- It's really for our users' benefit. I do technical support and technical writing for a living. I'm the buffer between the end users and the developers / technical support staff. I'd like to start doing more of that here. You'd like that, wouldn't you, Erik & Tim? Uncle Ed 14:12, July 16, 2005 (UTC)
Arguments against the feature
[edit]Let's make a list of arguments for/against the feature:
- When a user talk page is protected, other users cannot communicate with the blocked user.
- It's very easy to forget to unprotect the user talk page, even after the user is unblocked.
- Users blocked a long time ago can suddenly start editing their talk pages again.
- It is a strong deviation from the tradition of "User talk pages should only be protected in cases of persistent vandalism, and then only for as brief a period as possible". [1]
- It ignores the IP autoblocker, even if it was triggered by another account.
- It doesn't trigger the IP autoblocker.
- It is not easy to check the protections current in effect (unlike blocks, which can be checked with Special:Ipblocklist).
- Adding a template to the page to note the protection/unprotection (and to work around the previous problem) causes the "You have new messages" message.

Deletion
[edit]This page doesn't appear to be particularly useful anymore, nor even really a proper use of Wikipedia space. Would anyone object if I put a prod tag on it? --Elonka 16:55, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
