All living systems are bonded together by sets of values or internal codes such as preservation, adaptation, transformation, and reorganization. Current debates that pit individual freedom against social justice, or the economy against ecology, are debates about values that have been separated for too long within our collective consciousness. Individual needs and responsibilities (personal values) can no longer be separated from sociocultural needs and responsibilities (sociocultural values) or from the needs and responsibilities of the environment (biophysical values). All of these values must be integrated and linked together to create a sustainable and equitable future based on shared visions and values. The "resource wars" over climate change, endangered species, and other life-spaces attest to our current inability to adapt and transform our values, social structures, and institutions to preserve life in the face of rapid socio-ecological devastation. Understanding relationships between social values and the environment can help us create a bridge to a sustainable and just future for all living creatures. The primary objective of this class is to help students develop an understanding the human dimensions of ecosystem management, natural resource policy and sustainability. It will do so through a series of lectures, readings, research projects, presentations, and discussions on the these, and other human dimensions impacting socio-ecological systems. Much of the class will focus on building collaborative team projects designed to understand and apply social science and collaborative-based principles and strategies to understand how values, power and other human dimensions impact a species, habitat, policy, environmental problem or natural resource management program. Team members will work together throughout the semester to design and implement a team plan and make a formal audio-visual presentation of their research findings at the end of the semester. These projects will require meetings and conducting research outside of the class that will take significant time, effort and coordination.
