This course emphasizes use of current research evidence in healthcare decision-making, an activity known as evidence-based practice, and involves small group, case-based study of commonly encountered cardiovascular disorders, including thromboembolism, heart attack and stroke. Pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment will be discussed from the perspective of clinical and diagnostic professionals. There is an emphasis on critical thinking, clinical application and teamwork skills.
This course has three distinct parts – in the first part, we will be learning about Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) and what you need to do to implement EBP in this class and in your personal and professional lives. In the second part of this course, you will be reading “cases,” stories based on real patient experiences, using a standard method (Four-Columns) to analyze the case, asking clinical questions that meet the PPAARE standard, and using high quality, peer-reviewed sources to answer those questions. In the final part of this course, you will be using what you learned in the second part to update and cite the information provided on Wikipedia. It is important that the health information provided on wikipedia be accurate and up-to-date. Your contributions will positively contribute to the health of thousands of people worldwide.
