This course is an introduction to different aspects of Roman civilization from the Iron Age to the Imperial Period and even the modern day. It touches on subjects like Roman architecture, art, government, daily life, literature, and religion. The goal of the course is to understand the Romans through their material culture and words as well as through the views of modern scholars. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to identify and critically examine basic information about Roman history, society, politics, and culture as well as analyze and evaluate differing sources for information and interpret them using the historical method.
