By the end of this course, students will be able to:
• Give examples of how different cultures express grief differently, even though grief is a universal experience.
• Explain the contribution of American geographic mobility and the changing causes of death to the “invisibility” of death in our culture.
• Ask friends and family important questions about what kind of care they want at the end of their life, and explain what palliative and hospice care are.
• Recognize when someone they know shows sign of suicidal thoughts, and feel empowered to have real conversations about mental health.
• Apply developmental theories to how children, adolescents, adults, and older adults experience bereavement and approach dying.
• Communicate ideas clearly and logically in writing, whether in a quick email, a Wikipedia entry, or an essay.
