Throughout this course students appraise core theories of and approaches to studying migration; describe and explain under what conditions individuals move from one country to another; critically evaluate arguments and evidence surrounding controversial issues related to migration, as well as effectively communicate arguments; distinguish between migrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and why they are labeled in these ways; analyze and predict the variety of possible government responses to in-flows and the implications of such policies; and finally, identify the interests, interactions, and identities of actors likely to be involved in current and future population movements.
In the wikipedia assignment I would encourage students to contribute to editing entries that address the variety of laws and policies on the books here in the US and abroad with a view toward reflecting how they impact immigrants' lives.
