Students will be trained to enhance stubs and start articles related to a topic that interests them. They'll be trained along the way on how to do advanced information literacy searching using open access resources. This two pronged approach will allow them to grapple with their responsibility to conducting an informed and unbiased, scholarly conversation on a global scale.

Welcome to your Wikipedia assignment's course timeline. This page guides you through the steps you'll need to complete for your Wikipedia assignment, with links to training modules and your classmates' work spaces.

Your course has been assigned a Wikipedia Expert. You can reach them through the Get Help button at the top of this page.

Create an account and join this course page, using the enrollment link your instructor sent you. (Because of Wikipedia's technical restraints, you may receive a message that you cannot create an account. To resolve this, please try again off campus or the next day.)

Assignment - Choose possible topics

In class - Finding an Article (Detailed)
  • Go to the Wikipedia Community Page
  • Scroll down to the "Help Out" section
  • Browse the lists of articles that need help, click "more" to expand the listings
  • Once you find an article you want contribute to you'll need copy it into your sandbox
  • Remember you'll need to add a paragraph around 10 sentences long or 2 paragraphs around 5 sentences each.
Milestones

You should have two articles you are interested in editing in your sandbox as hyperlinks, you don't need the full article. Just a link and comment on what you'd like to add or fix.

You will be using "open access" sources for your entry. These are websites, journal articles, news articles, and ebooks that are free for anyone to use. This video will help you find those sources.

Assignment - Continue improving your article

Now's the time to revisit your text and refine your work. You may do more research and find missing information; rewrite the lead section to represent all major points; reorganize the text to communicate the information better; or add images and other media.

Milestones

At the start of this week you should have a draft of your contribution. You'll consider adding images or video to your entry and end the week finalizing the draft.

Now that you've improved your draft based on my feedback, it's time to move your work live - to the "mainspace."

  • Read Editing Wikipedia page 15 to review a final check-list before completing your assignment.
