Methods and practices for occupational safety training and education. I would like to offer 3 options for assignments: Contributing content to an article, Translating an article, or Contributing images/media. I think that creating a new article is probably too much for this first group, so I would like to keep it limited in scope to a ~5 week project as part of the course.

In the past, I have mostly contributed to articles as part of the Occupational Safety/Health WikiProject, and I would like to continue for this group: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Occupational_Safety_and_Health

This is a junior/senior level class in our Fire and Safety Engineering Technology Program. Currently, we have 11 students enrolled. Most of the students are in the Fire Safety and Fire Protection tracks, but have taken courses in workplace safety.

We also have ~10-20% of our students who are from Saudi Arabia, which is why I am interested in having a translation option. (Thais Morata has a colleague at NIOSH/CDC that knows Arabic (and Mike Benjamin has a colleague from Iran who also knows Arabic) so that Arabic translations can be checked.

Assignment - Option
Translate an article

If you have fluency in a second language, you may wish to translate a Wikipedia article either from the English Wikipedia to the Wikipedia of your second language or vice-versa.

When translating articles, keep the following in mind:

  • Be sure to check that the article you wish to translate does not already exist on the Wikipedia where you'll be doing the translating.
  • Be sure to evaluate the article you wish to translate - i.e. ensure that it's well-developed and well-sourced.
  • Keep in mind that each language Wikipedia has its own set of norms and policies and is administered by its own community.
  • Finally, remember that translation is not simply about words, but it's also an act of cultural understanding and exchange.
