This course introduces the history and themes of the American West. The American West has long had a mythic hold on the American mind. From the stoic cowboy to the hardships of the wagon trains, the region has often been depicted as white, wild, and rural. This course will help debunk these mythic wests with an exploration of the diversity of the region, racially, environmentally, and geographically. We will consider themes integral to the study of the West, including colonization, environment, race, and resistance.
