This course focuses on feminist epistemological critiques in the field of Women’s and Gender Studies. We will analyze the different ways women know and how those knowledge positions have been informed by culture and complicated by the power dynamics within a patriarchal framework. We will also explore how the intersections of gender, race, and sexuality fit into the western societal construct of being, knowing, and thinking and how the embodiment of that lived experience informs self-efficacy, personal narrative and one’s identity as a producer of knowledge.
Epistemology is the theory of knowledge; it is the basis from which we draw knowledge and helps to explain how we know, what we know. From a feminist standpoint, we approach epistemology by questioning the role of power in knowledge and the influence gender has on it. Throughout this course, we will return to the same questions that will guide our discourse:
• What are the power dynamics that might influence our position as knowers?
• Who has access to knowledge and in what ways?
• How does our relationship to knowledge shape our capacity to contribute knowledge content?
Theory and Practice: There will be an emphasis on the evaluation and critiquing of Wikipedia through the lens of a Women's and Gender Studies perspective. We will actively engage in editing and contributing content to articles related to the course subject matter. While our course work will emphasize concentration of theories of knowledge in relation to feminist thought, students will spend a great deal of time becoming familiar with Wikipedia to become proficient with this platform to edit and create new articles relating to the course subject-matter.
