Community psychology arose out of the socio-political movements of the 1960’s. Community psychologists views social problems as caused by unequal distributions of resources. To address social problems, community psychologists work in equal partnership with community members, addressing power imbalances and with a focus on prevention and community empowerment. The course takes an ecological viewpoint to learning about topics pertaining to community diversity, power and oppression, prevention, community action and organizing, social change, and empowerment. This course encourages students to consider social, organizational, and socio-political and historical contextual determinants of individual human behavior and social problems, and helps students further define their values, biases, and interests within the field of psychology, and develop practical skills.
