The course focuses on how gender has been central to the construction of modern Jewish identity - both internally, within Jewish communities, and externally, by the dominant cultures in places where Jewish communities have existed. We use both historical and cultural materials to trace the connections between gender and Jewish identity. I plan to have students write Wikipedia articles on either modern Jewish women or modern Jewish cultural materials (films, literature, TV).
