This course examines the genre of city symphony films over the 20th century. Usually under 1 hour in duration, these non-fiction and often experimental films were made in the 1920s and 1930s, mainly in Europe and North America. While a few famous examples are well covered in both academic literature and on Wikipedia, there are still many films that have no coverage or only stub articles on Wikipedia. For this assignment (assignment 2 of the course), students will be required to add to, or create, pages for these films, drawing on a recent scholarly compilation 'The City Symphony Phenomenon' (2019) from the Routledge AFI Reader series, plus other sources.
