What is the difference between a revolution and a social movement? Why and how do revolutions and social movements take place? Who participates and why? How are social movements organized? What tactics and strategies do they use and why? Do they make a difference? Through a review of sociological and other social scientific research on social movements, in this course we seek to answer these and other related questions. As we learn the answer to these questions, we will also explore social movement theories and learn about various social movements in the USA, abroad, and globally. In the course, students also develop leadership, research, critical thinking, synthesizing, and writing skills.
