The LIBR 1 Working with Sources course provides an introduction to using sources as supporting documentation in a college-level research project. We develop skills needed to successfully find, evaluate, use, cite, and document information using library and open web sources. We focus on identifying appropriate sources and the proper use of sources. Students learn to distinguish between source types, how to avoid plagiarism, and how to use sources in their English course research projects. To accomplish these goals, students first develop and dive into the research process for a Wikipedia entry related to their course topics. The Wikipedia assignment culminates by adding one to two sentences of information from a scholarly source, with a citation to add to the Wikipedia entry. Once completed, students continue their research to prepare themselves to write a research paper with a thesis on their topics.
