In this writing intensive course, I will encourage students to consider what counts as evidence among public health professionals and popular audiences. Through a series of case studies from the field of epidemiology, now emblematic of public health, students will interrogate the formal structure of scientific arguments and gain practice in synthesizing and communicating complex ideas to a lay audience. Together, we will explore the changing ideas and assumptions that have shaped our (always) political struggles to understand and improve health in the United States. At the same time, we will consider how media and communication technologies (from the written word to the podcast) shape the water in which we swim and create blockades or openings in the way we communicate about health and disease.
