This course will explore the relationship between various 20th-century dance practices and their contemporary worlds, particularly how these forms were in conversation with significant societal changes. We will look at specific periods of substantial social transformation in American culture including the 1930s, 1960s, and 1990s, considering how dance embodied and engaged with these periods of change.
Students will use the Wikipedia assignment to expand the information available on less-well-documented (but still noteworthy) figures and movements touched on by the course.
