This interdisciplinary course explores the coupled dynamics of humans and the biosphere through time, from hominid evolution more than 2.5 million years ago to the present era. Topics of discussion include, among others, human evolution and climate change; domestication, agriculture, and the Anthropocene; the roles of climate, culture, and the environment in the collapse of civilization; and sustainability, resilience, and the paleorecord. The curriculum draws from anthropology, geography, paleoecology, and the climate sciences to inform on the integrated relationship between humans and their environment in the context of global change. Each student will also be responsible for choosing a topic related to the course material and spending the semester creating a new or editing an existing wikipedia page on that topic.
