This reading-intensive course will provide a comprehensive understanding of the development of political parties in the United States, their realignments, the maintenance of the two-party system, and the (im)possibility, allegedly, of third parties. We will look at the framers’ understandings of factions and the rise of interest groups and political association. This course will delve deeply into the role of political parties at the local, state, and national levels, as well as the role of parties in presidential elections; individual partisanship and political ideologies; and the work of nonpartisan elected officials.
