This course is an introduction to geology through place-based learning focused on the geology of Mexico. It emphasizes a problem-based approach to learning geology and the process of scientific investigation, including forming evidence-based conclusions and reasoned opinions about science-related matters of personal, public and ethical concern.
Topics include a wide range of geological concepts including the plate tectonic setting of Mexico, Mexican volcanic belt, Mexico City earthquakes, issues of surface and groundwater supply, flooding, atmospheric pollution, mass extinction and the Chicxulub crater, ores and other natural resources of Mexico.
Students will work in small groups to edit and enhance existing articles on Wikipedia relating the Geology of Mexico that are currently lacking content (i.e., stubs). This will included adding or revising text and images.
