This course explores physical, social, economic, and political aspects of neighborhood change, with a particular emphasis on the 1950-1970 urban renewal and interstate highway programs in the US. These large-scale government-led efforts will be compared with more incremental neighborhood change from neighborhood-based community development efforts, gentrification, market actors, and grassroots advocacy. The major assignment for this course is to substantially revise an existing Wikipedia article or draft a new Wikipedia article for a topic related to urban renewal. The topic must be one that is underdeveloped on Wikipedia but that also has significant coverage in reliable, scholarly sources.
