Correct pronounciation of 'Wikipedia'

[edit]

Well, after some flaming about how it's pronounced after it was spoken aloud, I think we should hire CableModem (who I think has skype) to say it the right way, seeing as the word is derived from Hawaiian, and he is living in Hawaii. :DMichael Billington (talkcontribs) 09:27, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

But he says "Weaky". It's "Whicky"! – Gurch 13:26, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The opinions of a number of Wiktionary people can be heard here and especially here. The variations in the latter are pretty wide. In general, the pronunciation of a word ultimately has to do with how people gravitate towards saying it rather than necessarily how it is "supposed to" be said, particularly for loan words. Thus, many words that English borrows from French no longer sound the same at all. Compare the pronunciations, for instance, on brouhaha or lieutenant. —Dvortygirl 14:56, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well... that's always a solution.. but personally I think constant skype-flamewars are much more fun :D Michael Billington (talkcontribs) 10:52, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Global Questions

[edit]
  1. What are are your thoughts on a "kid safe" version of Wikipedia that is clearly marked as such for elementary ed. SEWiki is easier to read for young(er) children but is still uncensored, what are your thoughts on a "kid safe" version of Wikipedia to allow more widespread usage in elementary and other "censored" forms of education.

Questions for Jimbo

[edit]
  1. In a recent email, you asked the community for things that we'd like to make free, that would otherwise be difficult to reproduce. That's such an open question, like "you're stuck on a desert island, what album would you take with you?", so I can see it invites almost any kind of answer. What kind of responses have you received to that email, and what are your own thoughts on the matter?
  2. So, that said... what album would you take with you to a desert island?
  3. It has been suggested by some users what we look into video with this $1Mil. Can you see Wikipedia moving into user created video or does video seem to be problems on a massive scale
  4. Would this funding allow WMF to expand server capacity to include this additional information or is this simply for the IP rights to the content, the capacity to serve it being needed to be created later?
  5. Wikipedia has come under fire over its accuracy in recent times, and everyone seems to be comparing it to alternatives like Britannica and, to a lesser extent, Encarta. Do you think Wikipedia has anything to learn from other major encyclopedias, and perhaps from project forks like Larry Sanger's Citizendium?
Comments re WSJ Interview on reliability
  6. Do you see Iran's restriction on internet speeds as an issue for Wikipedia and citizen media?
  7. Has there been any contact w/ China whatsoever?
  8. Do you see yourself as a figurehead?
