Wikipedia:WikiProject Webcomics/WCCA
This is an essay. It contains the advice or opinions of one or more Wikipedia contributors. This page is not an encyclopedia article, nor is it one of Wikipedia's policies or guidelines, as it has not been thoroughly vetted by the community. Some essays represent widespread norms; others only represent minority viewpoints. |
The Web Cartoonists' Choice Awards was an annual awards ceremony that ran from 2001 to 2008. They were a form of peer recognition by the webcomics community, with voting rights granted to creators. Citing the WCCA can be useful in illustrating the prominence of webcomics that were active during that time, but the website that hosted the awards is no longer online and so data on nominees and winners is stored across a number of archived pages, including at least one year where the nominees and winners are not listed in text but noted in images scattered across over a dozen pages.
This essay provides easy to use links for citing the WCCA, consolidates results in years where no text file is available, and comments on using the WCCA in discussions of notability.
All nominees
[edit]If someone is very keen, it would be great to insert a table here of all winners and nominees across all years, to make it easy to find if a given comic or person was ever nominated.

WCCA and notability
[edit]In my opinion, the WCCA cannot be used as a source to establish notability.
The general test for notability of a subject requires the subject to have "received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject", where "significant coverage" means "addresses the topic directly and in detail". The WCCA sources are not significant coverage. They do not discuss the comics or artists in any detail; one could not go to the WCCA pages and learn much of anything about the comics, such as their plot, characters, starting date, or readership figures.
This is separate to citing them, of course. While significant coverage is needed to demonstrate notability, less significant coverage remains important for filling out the article and providing information not covered by other sources.
