Hundreds
[edit]With the introduction of the historic counties in 1542 the hundreds became the next division below counties. We have some hundreds' descriptions, including lists of the parishes that comprise the hundreds, for example, Abergavenny Hundred, but we could do with:
- Hundreds of Anglesey
- Hundreds of Brecknockshire
- Hundreds of Caernarfonshire
- Hundreds of Cardiganshire
- Hundreds of Carmarthenshire
- Hundreds of Denbighshire
- Hundreds of Flintshire
- Hundreds of Glamorganshire
- Hundreds of Merionethshire
- Hundreds of Monmouthshire
- Hundreds of Montgomeryshire
- Hundreds of Pembrokeshire
- Hundreds of Radnorshire
See Hundreds of Bedfordshire and Hundreds of Cornwall as examples. The Hundreds of Carmarthenshire are:
- Carnwallon
- Cathinog Hundred
- Cayo Hundred
- Derllys Hundred, but mentioned in some church/parish pages. Derllys was also previously a commote in Cantref Gwarthaf
- Elvet Hundred
- Iscennen Hundred
- Kidwelly Hundred
- Perfedd Hundred
As far as I can tell Pembrokeshire and Monmouthshire are the only historic counties that have all their hundreds represented in articles at the moment.
Parishes Ancient & Modern
[edit]The hundreds were made up of parishes that had civil as well as ecclesiastical powers, and generally the parishes remained the same for hundreds of years, but with the industrial revolution, movements of population, rise in democracy etc, the parishes became civil parishes and developed and changed in a different pattern to the ecclesiastical parishes.
As an example:
- Llanfrechfa parish was one of four parishes that controlled the Eastern Valley (along with Blaenavon, Trevethin, and Llantarnam). Llanfrechfa was split into Upper and Lower to cope with Pontypool, and then was effectively sidelined with the development of the rural and district councils, and in 1921 was moved from the Diocese of Llandaff to the newly created Diocese of Monmouth (centred on the cathedral in Newport...). Llanfrechfa is now (ecclesiastically) part of The Parish of Llanfrechfa and Llanddewi Fach with Llandegveth. I don't think you can find any of that history on Wikipedia, and I'm sure a lot of other parishes have complex histories that we don't cover. Add any that you know of here:
Urban and Rural District Councils and Municipal and County Boroughs
[edit]Of the twenty urban and rural districts formed in Monmouthshire in 1894 and dissolved in 1974 only one (Caerleon UD) has an article... See Urban districts formed in England and Wales 1894–95 and Urban districts formed in England and Wales 1896–1974 (there is only a handful of Welsh districts in the second list).
Some of the other historic counties have many articles for urban and rural districts but many of these are stubs...
Welsh Communities
[edit]These are the lowest tier of local government in Wales with the same sort of powers as civil parishes in England. They are also often "communities" in the more general sense of being villages, housing estates, parts of towns etc. However, these distinctions are often not made clear, and are often confusingly redirected to other areas. For example Cwmbran Central redirects to Cwmbran which is not at all accurate. This, and at least some other (local government) communities should have their own page. Add any that you know of here:
- Cwmbran Central
- Forden with Leighton and Trelystan (Powys)
- Goetre Fawr (Monmouthshire)
- Grovesend and Waungron (Swansea) (currently a redirect)
- Gwehelog Fawr (Monmouthshire) (currently a redirect)
- Laugharne Township (Carmarthenshire)
- Llanbradach and Pwllypant (Caerphilly County Borough)
- Llanfihangel Cwmdu with Bwlch and Cathedine (Powys)
- Llanidloes Without (Powys}
- Magor with Undy (Monmouthshire)
- Nantyglo and Blaina (Blaenau Gwent)
- Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn (Powys)
- Penyrheol, Trecenydd and Energlyn (Caerphilly County Borough)
- Pontlliw and Tircoed (Swansea) (currently a redirect)
- Radyr and Morganstown (Cardiff)
- St David's and the Cathedral Close (Pembs)
- Trelawnyd and Gwaenysgor (Flintshire)
and add any that need rewriting to clarify their multiple purposes here:
