Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Peer review/Dante (Devil May Cry)
I am resubmiting this request since the first one went unattended. Since then the page has been treated and shaped after Link's Featured version, in the process being raised to Good Article, now as part of the Devil May Cry task force's goal of raising the pages to their best I ask as a favor that anyone who passes judgement to please do so just like if this was a FAC. As before any concerns and points will be attended by me ASAP, thanks to anyone that comments. -凶 04:13, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit]I would like to see some expansion of Conception and creation, in line with the Link article you mentioned. Interview quotes and references would be best. Also, try to incorporate something about Dante's voice actor(s), as seen in Link. Along these lines, more needs to be made of his characteristics after the below issues have been taken care of (many of them deal with Characteristics).
The article has a fair amount of original research. For example, "Dante's character was designed as the polar opposite of the vulnerable and cautious human characters of the survival horror genre". This is not stated by the developers in any of the section's references. If a reference can't be located, then this should be removed. Similar statements include:
- "In terms of gameplay, while survival horror players (and characters) must ration supplies like ammunition, solve challenging puzzles, and evade large groups of enemies to advance through the game, Dante has few of these restrictions. Dante's ammunition is unlimited, puzzles are simpler, and battling groups of enemies is the game's main focus." -- needs a reference/rewrite to remove OR.Added reference dealing with all aspects
- "The main difference being that Cobra fights aliens, in comparison to Dante who fights demons." -- "the main difference" is original research, but how is this information necessary in the first place?Line deleted
- "As befits their names, Ebony is primarily black, while Ivory is primarily white. Ebony and ivory are the nicknames for black keys (sharps) and white keys (naturals) of musical keyboard instruments such as the piano." -- original research, and possibly cruft.Done
- "Dante is never shown needing to reload these or other firearms, though the reason for this ability is not explained in-game." -- is this necessary information? If it is, then it needs a reference, because it's currently cruft and original research.Done
- "Dante and his brother Vergil share their names with Dante Alighieri and Publius Vergilius Maro (called Virgil in English), poets of epic works. In Dante Alighieri's work The Divine Comedy, Dante (the author) is guided through Hell and Purgatory by Virgil, whose work deeply inspired Dante, and Heaven by Beatrice Portinari, Dante's ideal of perfect love. The Devil May Cry characters have roughly similar roles to their namesakes in the poem; in the first game, Dante ventures into the domain of Mundus, king of the demon world. Vergil continuously confronts Dante as he delves further into Mundus' castle, egging him on and drawing him closer to Mundus himself. Trish's role roughly parallels that of Beatrice, being Dante's inspiration, savior and redeemer. Other characters in the series share names with figures in the poem, as noted on the Characters in Devil May Cry page." -- either find a boatload of good reference material for this, or cut the entire paragraph. This is easily the article's worst OR violation.Done
Another thing I noted was the unreliability of this source. I recommend removing this and either finding a reliable source for the information it cited, or removing said information entirely. There are probably other issues, but I figured I shouldn't heap too much on your plate at once. JimmyBlackwing 19:40, 24 April 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for responding Jimmy, I removed the original research lines, and will rewrite the paragraph that you stated needs removal of some OR. I will expand Coception and creation soon, I will post a message here once it's done, cheers. -凶 20:16, 24 April 2007 (UTC)
- Regarding the guns, I don't see how saying one gun is white while the other is black, or that they have the same names as piano keys, is either OR or cruft. Their colors are obvious as are their names. Consider the paragraph on Epona on the Link (Legend of Zelda) page (a featured article) which notes the horse shares its name with a goddess. --Boradis 21:52, 24 April 2007 (UTC)
- I added a cite regarding reloading. This is not cruft, it's a noteworthy gameplay deviation from other games as it's been noted in reviews. --Boradis 22:13, 24 April 2007 (UTC)
- Removed a bunch of other information on the guns that can't be independently verified. --Boradis 22:40, 24 April 2007 (UTC)
- The article is looking better already. Here are a few more suggestions to go along with the ones above:
- "In terms of gameplay, while survival horror players (and characters) must ration supplies like ammunition, solve challenging puzzles, and evade large groups of enemies to advance through the game, Dante has few of these restrictions. Dante's ammunition is unlimited, puzzles are simpler, and battling groups of enemies is the game's main focus." -- didn't notice this before, but this stuff could use a few citations. Since the comparison between Dante and Resident Evil protagonists has been removed, it could also use a little context.Done
- "though this or any name for the transformation is never spoken in-game." -- needs independent sourcing.Line deleted
- "In this state, Dante possesses more speed, steady health regeneration, and further abilities with his equipped melee weapon." -- game manual reference would be nice here.Done
- The lead could use some expansion, using information from Conception and creation and Characteristics. The fact that he is heavily influenced by Cobra, for example, could do with a mention in the lead.
- Dante is now a fairly iconic character, up there with other industry icons like Solid Snake and the Master Chief. This makes me think that sources may exist for a section dedicated to his cultural impact. Things like merchandise, reception and status as an icon could all be added, if sources exist. Usable pieces of information are probably already in the Devil May Cry 1-3 articles, including that bit about "Extreme Combat" from Devil May Cry; Dante starred in a game that practically created its own genre, so why not mention that?Done
- Dante's appearances in the Devil May Cry series could probably be made a little more out-of-universe than it is now.
- The overall article still needs more references. Try to reference anything that might need it, including things like "Hideki Kamiya, who directed the first game, was not involved in the sequel's development and the creative team behind the sequel took a drastically different direction." I know this is true from seeing the references in the other Devil May Cry articles, but these citations are missing here, for some reason.
- I don't know if you're aiming for FA status with this article, but you requested a FAC-style review, so I gave it. JimmyBlackwing 00:23, 25 April 2007 (UTC)
- You sure did, I will mark what has been done with checkmarks to make keeping up with the pace simpler. -凶 02:22, 25 April 2007 (UTC)
