Wiki99 for open source software is a University of Virginia Wikipedia editing program in which students develop content with the theme "open source software. Students also contribute to the development of the overall program, including the selection of 99 target articles.
Articles
[edit]All articles are in the theme "open-source software". There are two ways to see articles developed in this project.
One list is at meta:Wiki99/open-source software. This is a list of 99 articles of general interest selected to be important to readers. Editors in this project develop articles from this list, but not all articles from this list will be selected at this time.
Another list is at the Program dashboard. This dashboard lists all the articles which students actually edit, and also lists the student editors and other options for data visualization.
Ethics
[edit]Paid editing disclosure
[edit]Lane Rasberry, user:bluerasberry, hires and manages the student Wikipedia editors in this project. These student editors are employees of the University of Virginia, and they engage with Wikipedia as student research assistants. Funding for this project comes from grants from Hewlett Foundation and Omidyar Network. This project is centered in the School of Data Science at the University of Virginia, and contributes informally as an independent research project to the University of Virginia's Democracy Initiative described at https://democracyinitiative.virginia.edu/ .
Please direct questions to either user:bluerasberry or Wikipedia talk:WikiProject University of Virginia.
Student editors add this to their user page:

Management description
[edit]Editors in this project must uphold "neutrality". Neutrality can have many meanings and editors can practice it in various ways. In this project, the strategy for achieving neutrality is as follows:
- The project is open to public discussion on the talk page at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject University of Virginia.
- Students complete Wikipedia editing training at https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/training
- Editing in the project happens in the model of the en:Wikipedia:Education program. In this model, each student does their own research to identify the best sources of information for that topic. They draft the best information they can while citing those sources. The program coordinator reviews and approves their edits before they post the content to Wikipedia.
Disclosure of other conflicts
[edit]- Coordinator Lane Rasberry user:bluerasberry is Wikimedian in Residence at the School of Data Science at the University of Virginia, and gets salary. These roles get peer-to-peer review through meta:Wikimedians in Residence Exchange Network and other Wikimedia community checks.
- Class editing projects can introduce problems as logged at Wikipedia:Education noticeboard. These projects get community review and usually produce good outcomes, as described for example in a Wiki Education Program coordinator's 2022 opinion piece in Wikipedia's newsletter, The Signpost.
- This project pays student editors as research assistants. Wikipedia regulates paid editing in Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.
Some reasons why this project is different from other paid editing projects include the following: these articles are general knowledge and not promoting any project or brand; this is a university student editing project; and University of Virginia students uphold University of Virginia Honor which gives them options for getting independent support should they identify any ethical issues with this project.
