Wilton Railroad
[edit]Location and General Description of Property
[edit]The railroad of Wilton Railroad Company, herein referred to as the Wilton Railroad, is a single-track, standard-gage, steam railroad, lying wholly within the State of New Hampshire and extending from Nashua to Wilton, 15.405 miles. The Wilton Railroad also owns 5.726 miles of other tracks, including 0.181 mile of second main track, a total of 21.131 miles of all tracks. This property is operated by the carrier as lessee through the Boston and Lowell.
Corporate History
[edit]The Wilton Railroad was incorporated under special act of New Hampshire of December 28, 1844, for the purpose of constructing a railroad between a point on the Concord Railroad and Marlow, N. H. Its principal office is at Nashua, N. H.
Development of Fixed Physical Property
[edit]The construction, under contract, of the property of the Wilton Railroad was begun in December, 1847. The section of the road between Nashua and Amherst (now Ponemah, N. H.), a distance of about 8 miles, was opened for operation on November 23, 1848, and that between the latter point and Wilton, about 7 miles, was opened on June 10, 1851.
Leased Railway Property
[edit]The Wilton Railroad's property has been operated since October 11, 1887, by the carrier as lessee through the Boston and Lowell Railroad. The lease, which runs for a period of 99 years from October 1, 1883, stipulates an annual rental of 5 per cent on the Wilton Railroad's capital stock (7 per cent prior to January 1, 1891). Improvements to the property made by the lessee are to be settled for at the termination of the lease; certain expenditures for increase in weight of track material have been assumed by the carrier and accounted for as additional rental. The rental accrued for the year ended at date of valuation is recorded as $20,445.24, of which $45.24 represents the additional rental.
