The railroad of St. John & Ophir Railroad Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track standard-gauge steam railroad, about 8.5 miles long, wholly within the State of Utah, extending from St. John where it connects with the line of the San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad Company, eastward to Ophir, where it connects with the operating facilities of the Ophir Hill Consolidated Mining Company. The length of the main line is 8.492 miles. Other tracks total 0.587 mile. The line is located about 35 miles southwest of Salt Lake City.

Corporate history.—The carrier was incorporated on March 5, 1912, under the general laws of the State of Utah, for a period of 100 years. The principal incorporator was J. Ross Clark, acting as trustee for William A. Clark, who controls the carrier through the ownership of substantially all of its capital stock. The railroad was constructed by the Utah Construction Company under a contract between that company and William A. Clark, owner, dated March 11, 1912, and by the Ophir Hill Consolidated Mining Company, without formal contract. Construction commenced about March 2, 1912, and the line was placed in operation July 18, 1912.
