It connects with the former at Louisville and with the latter at Danville, Burgin, Lexington, and Georgetown. The property embraces 127.185 miles of first main, and 32.590 miles of yard and side tracks, a total of 159.775 miles of all tracks. In addition the company owns jointly with others 0.126 mile of yard and side track which the Southern uses jointly with the other joint owners.
- CORPORATE HISTORY
The Southern in Kentucky was incorporated August 17, 1894, under the general laws of the State of Kentucky of April 5, 1893, for the purpose of taking over the property, rights, and franchises of the Louisville Southern Railroad Company. The company last named had previously been acquired by the Richmond Terminal reorganization committee, together with certain other railroad companies, comprising the system of lines that had been controlled by the Richmond and West Point Terminal Railway and Warehouse Company, which it was the purpose of that committee to reorganize into the Southern. However, when the Louisville Southern Railroad Company was acquired it was found that certain acts of the Kentucky Legislature prohibited foreign corporations from operating a railroad in that State. As a consequence the Southern in Kentucky was incorporated to take over that property, which was conveyed to it by the Richmond and West Point Terminal and Warehouse Company by deeds dated August 20, 1894, and January 13, 1896.
