The railroad of The South Shore Rail Road Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track standard-gauge steam railroad, operating as a switching road in West End, Pittsburgh, Pa. Its main line extends from a connection with the railroad of The Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis Railway Company in a northwesterly direction to a connection with the railroad of The Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad Company. The carrier wholly owns and uses 0.484 mile of main track and 1.536 miles of yard tracks and sidings. Its road thus embraces 2.020 miles of all tracks owned.

The carrier was incorporated September 14, 1892, under the general laws of the State of Pennsylvania, for the purpose of owning and operating about 5 miles of railroad in Allegheny County, Pa., to extend from a point in Esplen Borough, at or near the junction of Chartiers Creek and the Ohio River, along the south bank of the Monongahela River, to a point near the foot of Thirteenth Street, Pittsburgh, Pa.

The owned mileage of the carrier was all acquired through purchase from the Clinton Iron and Steel Company.
