CORPORATE HISTORY

The Sievern and Knoxville was incorporated by a special act of South Carolina, approved February 16, 1898, to succeed to the property, rights, and franchises of The Greenwood, Anderson and Western Railway. The latter company was incorporated under an act of the Legislature of South Carolina approved January 5, 1895. The property of the latter was sold and conveyed to the organizers of the Sievern and Knoxville as indicated in the succeeding chapter, after receivership begun January 5, 1897.

DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY

The property of The Greenwood, Anderson and Western Railway was sold at a master's sale on December 9, 1897, and conveyed to a purchasing committee by deed of G. H. Sass, special master, dated January 8, 1898. The purchasing committee conveyed the property to the Sievern and Knoxville by deed April 25, 1898. The property thus acquired consisted of 8.04 miles of completed road from Sievern to Alathea and 9.44 miles of graded roadway from Alathea to Batesburg. The construction of the latter was completed by the Sievern and Knoxville subsequent to its acquisition. The aggregate of the recorded mileage stated above, of 17.48 miles, exceeds by 0.092 mile the inventoried mileage of 17.388 miles.
