The railroad of Salt Lake & Los Angeles Railway Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track standard-gauge steam railroad, located in the north central part of Utah. The owned mileage extends in a westerly direction from Salt Lake City to the Great Salt Lake at Saltair, Utah, a distance of 14.097 miles. The carrier also owns yard and side tracks totaling 3.787 miles. Its road thus embraces 17.884 miles of all tracks owned. Its depot and track facilities in Salt Lake City are leased from the Oregon Short Line Railroad Company. It also uses jointly with the Inland Crystal Salt Company 0.58 mile of yard tracks belonging to the latter company at the salt works near Saltair Junction. In Appendix 1 will be found a general description of the property of the carrier.

Corporate history.—The carrier was originally incorporated as The Saltair Railway Company under the laws of the then Territory of Utah for a period of 50 years. Articles of incorporation were filed September 26, 1891, and organization was perfected October 15, 1891. The purpose of the incorporators was to construct a line of railway from Salt Lake City extending westerly a distance of about 15 miles to a point on Great Salt Lake, in order to serve the pleasure resort known as Saltair Beach. On July 13, 1892, by an amendment of the articles of incorporation the corporate title became that borne at date of valuation. Another amendment of the articles filed November 12, 1903, authorized the extension of the road southerly to a point on the Utah-Nevada State line, an addition of 140 miles, but none of this mileage has been constructed. The principal office is in Salt Lake City. Since December 31, 1906, the carrier has been controlled through stock ownership by Joseph Nelson and J. E. Langford, of Salt Lake City.
