The railroad of The Preston Railroad Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track, standard-gage, steam railroad, located in Maryland and West Virginia. The main line extends from Hutton, Md., in a southerly direction, crossing and recrossing the West Virginia-Maryland State line, to end of track north of Shafer, W.Va., a distance of 10.935 miles, with a branch line projecting from the main line at Crellin, Md., to a point 3.352 miles southwest thereof in West Virginia, aggregating 14.287 miles of main track. The main line formerly extended to Shafer, W.Va., but prior to date of valuation the southerly portion of the line had been abandoned. The carrier also owns 1.232 miles of yard tracks and sidings. Its road thus embraces 15.519 miles of all tracks owned and used, as classified by States in appendix 1.
The carrier was organized as an industrial railroad, and has served and has been controlled by various coal and lumber companies.
- CORPORATE HISTORY
The carrier was incorporated July 29, 1897, under general laws of Maryland. The date of its organization has not been ascertained. Its annual reports show that road was built primarily as a logging railroad.
