Corporate history.—The Paragould Southeastern was incorporated October 11, 1887, under the general laws of Arkansas, as the Paragould and Buffalo Island Railway Company, for the purpose of constructing a narrow-gauge tramroad eastward from Paragould for about 8 miles. By an amendment to the articles of incorporation, filed in the States of Arkansas and Missouri November 13, 1893, the corporate name was changed to Paragould Southeastern Railway Company, and authority granted to standard-gauge the line and extend the same to Cardwell, Mo. Further extensions of the line to Hornersville, Mo., and to Blytheville, Ark., were authorized by amendments filed August 12, 1897, and December 11, 1901, respectively. The carrier controls the Paragould Southeastern through ownership of its entire capital stock, and the entire property is leased to the carrier for sole operation under indenture dated January 1, 1914. Prior to that date the property was operated by the Paragould Southeastern. The principal office of the Paragould Southeastern is at St. Louis, Mo. The detailed facts as to the development of the fixed physical property are given in Appendix 2.

THE PARAGOULD SOUTHEASTERN

DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY

All of the property of the Paragould Southeastern, with the exception of the original line, was acquired by construction. The original line, extending eastward from Paragould, approximately 4 miles, was built by the Paragould Stave Manufacturing Company, largely for the purpose of getting out timber, and was acquired by the Paragould Southeastern from the incorporators. The line was extended about 4 miles to Bertig, Ark., in 1888, and the entire 8 miles was changed to standard gauge in 1893. Various extensions were subsequently completed and placed in operation, as follows:

Apr. 5, 1903, Hornersville, Mo., to Chlckasawba, Ark. 15
