The railroad of the Ontonagon Railroad Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track standard-gauge steam railroad, located in the northern part of Michigan. The owned mileage extends in a westerly direction from Ontonagon to Green, a distance of 6.439 miles. The carrier also owns and uses 0.158 mile of yard tracks and sidings. Its road thus embraces 6.597 miles of all tracks owned. The rails, other track material, and ballast on this road are owned by the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway Company, which operates over the line. The carrier is an industrial railroad. It reports that for the year ending December 31, 1918, it handled 5,803 tons of freight, of which 3,523 tons represented products of forests. Most of the traffic was received from the Greenwood Lumber Company, which is controlled by the same interests as the railroad.

CORPORATE HISTORY

The carrier was incorporated October 27, 1904, under the general laws of the State of Michigan for the purpose of constructing and operating about 1,325 feet of railroad in the city of Ontonagon, Mich. By an amendment to its articles of incorporation, dated May 4, 1906, its purpose of incorporation was amended to include the extension of its railroad by purchase of the logging road of the C. V. McMillan Company. The date of the organization of the carrier was not determined.

DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY

The owned mileage of the carrier, consisting of 6.439 miles of railroad between Ontonagon and Green, Mich., was all acquired by purchase in April, 1906, from the C. V. McMillan Company. Details with respect to the construction of the road were not obtained. All the rails, together with frogs, switches, splices, and bolts on the tracks, are owned by the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway Company.
