Location and general description of property.—The railroad of the Newaukum Valley Railroad Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track standard-gage, steam railroad, located in the southwestern part of the State of Washington. The main line extends easterly from Napavine to Onalaska, a distance of 10.605 miles. The carrier also owns 3.062 miles of yard tracks and sidings. Its road thus embraces 13.667 miles of all tracks owned and used. The carrier and the Carlisle Lumber Company grant each other joint use of certain tracks and terminal facilities at or near Onalaska, Wash.
The carrier is an industrial railroad. It is controlled by and serves principally the Carlisle Lumber Company which owns extensive timberland in the vicinity of the railroad and a large mill at Onalaska, Wash.
- CORPORATE HISTORY
The carrier was incorporated May 25, 1914, under general laws of Washington, for the purpose of acquiring by construction or purchase, owning, equipping, and operating railways, telegraph, telephone, and trolley lines from Napavine, Wash., in an easterly direction to the Cascade Mountains, with such branches and extensions as it might determine to construct or acquire. It was originally incorporated as Newaukum Railroad Company. The name was changed to Newaukum Valley Railroad Company October 5, 1914. The date of organization was October 3, 1914.
- DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY
The property of the carrier was constructed for it by The Carlisle–Pennell Lumber Company. Construction was begun at Napavine, Wash., June 1, 1914. and was completed and turned over for operation July 20, 1916.
