The railroad of the Marion and Southern Railroad Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track standard-gauge steam railroad, located in eastern South Carolina. The main line extends from Marion northwesterly to Brownsville, S. C., a distance of 20 miles. All yard tracks and sidings between these points are owned by private parties. Of the total mileage owned, only that portion between Marion and West Marion, S. C.. a distance of 1.608 miles, is used by the carrier. All tracks and facilities between West Marion and Brownsville, a distance of 18.392 miles, are leased to and operated by the Marion County Lumber Company, a noncarrier.
- CORPORATE HISTORY
The carrier was incorporated July 17, 1907, under the general railroad laws of the State of South Carolina, for the stated purpose of owning and operating a railroad to extend from Marion to Bennettsville, S. C.
- DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY
The railroad owned by the carrier was acquired partly by purchase and partly by construction. The company purchased about 12 miles of road, extending from Marion and Southern Junction to Gum Swamp, S. C., from the Marion County Lumber Company on January 1, 1911. It constructed about 8 miles of road, extending from Gum Swamp to Brownsville, S. C., during 1912.
