The railroad of the Lake Charles & Northern Railroad Company, hereinafter called the Lake Charles & Northern, is a single-track, standard-gage, steam railroad, located in the southwestern part of Louisiana, the line forming a part of Atlantic System of the Southern Pacific Company. The owned mileage extends in a northerly direction from Lake Charles to De Ridder, La., a distance of 44.357 miles. The Lake Charles & Northern also owns and uses 14.242 miles of yard tracks and sidings. Its road thus embraces 58.599 miles of all tracks.
- CORPORATE HISTORY
The Lake Charles & Northern was incorporated October 30, 1906, for a period of 50 years, under the general laws of Louisiana, the purpose being to own and operate a line of railroad between the towns of Lake Charles and De Ridder. The date of organization was October 30, 1906.
- DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY
The Lake Charles & Northern acquired its road through purchase and construction as follows:
- By purchase from Louisiana and Pacific Railway Company under deed dated Feb. 21, 1908, standard-gage road between De Ridder and a point near Fulton 25.95
- (Also a continuation of the grade, bridges, and culverts, for a narrow-gage track, for a distance of approximately 11.98 miles to a point near the present station of Newton, and right of way from the latter point to Lake Charles.)
- By construction, the Lake Charles & Northern completed (as standard gage) the 11.98 miles of partly constructed narrow-gage road described above and also extended the road a distance of approximately 6.42 miles to Lake Charles. This work was begun Oct. 31, 1906, and completed Oct. 25, 1908 18.40
