The railroad of The Gulf & Sabine River Railroad Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track standard-gauge steam railroad located entirely within the State of Louisiana. The owned mileage consists of a main line extending from Nitram in a northerly direction to Fullerton, together with a branch line from Fullerton to Thompson's Creek. The carrier owns and uses 16.228 miles of road and 6.701 miles of yard tracks and sidings, a total of 22.929 miles of all tracks. Apparently this property was constructed as a tap line in the interest of the Gulf Lumber Company, which owns extensive timberlands in the vicinity of the railroad and a large sawmill at Fullerton. The carrier reports that during the year 1919 it handled 665,009 tons of revenue freight, of which 642,428 tons represented forest products.

CORPORATE HISTORY

The carrier was incorporated September 1, 1906, under the general laws of the State of Louisiana, for the purpose of transporting freight and passengers by steam.

DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY

The owned mileage of the carrier, amounting to 16.228 miles, was all acquired by construction. The main line from Nitram to Fullerton, La., was constructed about 1908. Various spurs extending from Fullerton and about 11 miles of line extending from Stables to Johnson, La., were constructed in 1907 and later dates. Part of the spurs and the entire line from Stables to Johnson, La., have been abandoned prior to date of valuation.
