The railroad of The Garden City Western Railway Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track standard-gauge steam railroad, located in the southwestern part of Kansas. The owned mileage extends northwesterly from Garden City, Kans., to Wolf, Kans., a distance of 13.924 miles. The carrier also owns yard and side tracks totaling 1.265 miles. Its road thus embraces 15.189 miles of all tracks owned. In Appendix 1 will be found a general description of the property of the carrier.

Corporate history.—The carrier was incorporated on May 29, 1915, under the general laws of the State of Kansas for a period of 50 years. It was incorporated in the interest of the Garden City Sugar and Land Company. The purpose of the corporation was to construct, equip, own, maintain, and operate, in Finney County, Kans., about 20 miles of standard-gauge railroad for carrying freight; also to construct and maintain a telegraph and telephone line in connection therewith. The principal office of the carrier is at Garden City, Kans. It is controlled by individuals who control the Garden City Sugar and Land Company. The detailed facts as to the development of the fixed physical property are given in Appendix 2.

DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY

The railroad of the carrier was constructed principally by the Garden City Sugar and Land Company between August 1, 1915, and January 12, 1916. In the construction of the road, the Garden City Sugar and Land Company used about 3 miles of right of way that had been graded for Kansas–Colorado Railroad Company. The road was placed In operation on January 12, 1916, after which the carrier did some additional surfacing, constructed an engine house, and laid certain yard tracks.
