The railroad of Gainesville & Northwestern Railroad Company, hereinafter referred to as the carrier, is a single-track standard-gauge steam railroad located in the northern part of the State of Georgia. The owned mileage extends from a connection with the tracks of Gainesville Midland Railway at New Holland Junction to North Helen, a distance of 35.133 miles. The carrier also owns 2.566 miles of yard tracks and sidings, or a total of 37.699 miles of all tracks. It uses under trackage agreement the line of the Gainesville Midland Railway between New Holland Junction and Gainesville, a distance of about 2 miles.

Corporate history.—The carrier was incorporated on February 9, 1912, under the general laws of the State of Georgia, for the purpose of constructing and operating a railroad from Gainesville to Robertstown, Ga. Control of the carrier is vested in the Byrd-Mathews Investment Company, by whom the carrier's entire capital stock is owned. The carrier's principal office is at Gainesville. Ga.

The carrier's property was constructed by the Unicoi Gap Construction Company, by whom it was operated from date of opening, March 12, 1913, to July 1, 1913. There was an apparent affiliation between the carrier and the Unicoi Gap Construction Company, as the carrier's records indicate that S. B. Jeffries, general counsel of the carrier, was also president of the Unicoi Gap Construction Company at the time of construction of the property. No other information on this subject is available.
