The railroad of the East Jordan & Southern Railroad Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track standard-gauge steam railroad located in the northern part of Michigan. The owned mileage extends from East Jordan southwesterly to Bellaire, together with many logging branches, a total of 19.012 miles of main track. The carrier also owns and uses 36.788 miles of yard tracks and sidings. Its road thus embraces 55.800 miles of all tracks. The carrier is an industrial railroad. It reports that for the year ending December 31, 1918, it handled 254,128 tons of freight, of which 194,326 tons represented products of forests. Most of the traffic was received from the East Jordan Lumber Company, which is controlled by the same interests as the railroad.
- CORPORATE HISTORY
The carrier was incorporated July 9, 1901, under the general laws of the State of Michigan for the purpose of constructing and operating a railroad from East Jordan to Bellaire, Mich.
- DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY
The entire 19.012 miles of road owned by the carrier was acquired by purchase from the East Jordan Lumber Company. The construction of the road was commenced in 1898 and completed to Bellaire in 1901. Logging spurs were built as needed to remove the logs and other forest products, and on date of valuation these spurs amounted to 30.95 miles, which are classified and included in the total yard tracks and sidings of 36.788 miles. Included in the above logging spurs is the mileage of the Valley branch (distance not ascertained) purchased from the Detroit and Charlevoix Railroad Company (a predecessor of The Michigan Central Railroad Company), and conveyed to the carrier by deed dated September 20, 1916.
