The railroad of the Chicago and Western Indiana Railroad Company, herein called the carrier, is a standard-gage, steam operated, switching and terminal property, all located in the city of Chicago and suburbs, in Illinois, except one small tract of land in Indiana, which is leased to another carrier. The wholly owned mileage of the carrier aggregates 58.241 miles of road, with 106.646 miles of second and other main tracks. That portion of this property which is operated by the carrier includes 28.449 miles of road, extending from Dearborn and Polk streets, in Chicago, where its passenger terminal is located, to the Illinois-Indiana State line near Hammond, Ind., with a branch line from Hammond Junction to Dolton, Ill. The remaining 29.792 miles of owned road, extending from South Chicago to Cragin, Ill., with several short branches and extensive yards at Clearing, is leased to and operated by the Belt Railway. The mileage owned jointly by the carrier and another carrier comprises 0.164 undivided mile of double-track road, the carrier's portion of which is leased to the Belt Railway. The solely used but not owned mileage consists only of 0.109 mile of yard tracks and sidings at Seventy-eighth Street, Chicago, Ill., owned by the Chicago and Erie Railroad Company.

DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY

The owned mileage of the carrier amounting to 58.241 miles, was acquired partly by consolidation, partly by purchase, and partly by construction.

Of the five corporations that comprise the line of succession culminating in the carrier as at present constituted, the Chicago and Western Indiana Belt Railway Company and the South Chicago and Western Indiana Railroad Company did not construct any completed mileage. The property constructed by the remaining corporations, the years when the various portions of the line were constructed, and the manner in which the carrier acquired the property are indicated in the following table:
