The railroad of Cazenovia Southern Railroad Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track standard-gauge steam railroad located in the southwestern part of Wisconsin. The owned mileage extends in a southwesterly direction from La Valle to Cazenovia, a distance of 6.664 miles. The carrier also owns yard and side tracks totaling 0.636 mile. Its road thus embraces 6.290 miles of all tracks owned.

CORPORATE HISTORY

The carrier was incorporated December 19, 1913, under the general laws of Wisconsin. The purpose of the incorporation and the date of its organization were not disclosed by the records. The principal office is at Cazenovia.

The accounting records of the carrier or its predecessor were not in existence on date of valuation, and for this reason information given in this report is incomplete. The only obtainable record was a minute book. The major portion of the information contained herein, including the general balance sheet, has been obtained from the carrier's annual report to us as of June 30, 1916, as no reports or records were obtainable as of the date of valuation.

DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY

The property of the carrier was acquired through the purchase of the Cazenovia & Sauk City Railroad, which road was sold by the receiver at a public sale December 18, 1913. Construction work was commenced by the latter company during the year 1908.

INTRODUCTORY

The accounting records of the Cazenovia and Sauk City Railroad Company were not obtainable. Therefore no information can be given from the accounts in connection with the finances, operations, aids, investments, or original cost. On the date of its demise the Cazenovia and Sauk City Railroad Company owned and operated about 6 miles of single-track standard-gauge steam railroad extending from La Valle to Cazenovia, Wis. The property of the Cazenovia and Sauk City Railroad Company was operated by that company's own organization or by Chauncey E. Blake, receiver, from the date acquired for operation, January 19, 1909, until the date of demise, December 18, 1913. The period during which the receiver operated the property can not be definitely ascertained owing to the absence of records. The major portion of the data herein stated was taken from the annual report of the Cazenovia and Sauk City Railroad Company to us as of June 30, 1912. This report is referred to hereafter as the "annual report."

CORPORATE HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY

The Cazenovia and Sauk City Railroad Company was incorporated January 2, 1909, under the general laws of Wisconsin. Its road was constructed by its own forces during the year 1908. The annual report states that the Cazenovia and Sauk City Railroad Company was successor to the Lone Rock – La Valle Railroad Company, a Wisconsin corporation organized about 1904 and discontinued in 1907. Records for the latter company were not obtainable and it is not known whether or not it acquired any property. The Cazenovia and Sauk City Railroad Company disposed of its property, rights, and franchises at public sale held on December 18, 1913, to Joseph Duren and J. H. Leimkuehler and was reincorporated under the name of Cazenovia Southern Railroad Company.
