Location and General Description of Property

The railroad of Black Mountain Railway Company, herein called the carrier, is a single-track, standard-gage, steam railroad, located in the west-central part of North Carolina. The owned mileage extends in a general southwardly direction from Kona to a point near Eskota, 23.382 miles, with a branch of 0.337 mile, extending from a point near Eskota to Pensacola. The total length of the main line and branch is 23.719 miles. The carrier also owns yard and side tracks totaling 4.952 miles. Its road thus embraces 28.671 miles of all tracks owned.

Corporate History

The carrier was incorporated April 21, 1910, under the general laws of North Carolina, for the purpose of constructing and operating a railroad between a point on the line of the Carolina, Clinchfield and Ohio Railway near Booneford, and a point about 5 miles west of Burnsville. Its organization was perfected July 25, 1910. The principal office of the carrier is located at Burnsville. The construction of this railroad was financed principally by the Holston Corporation.

Leased Railway Property

The carrier has joint use with Carolina, Clinchfield and Ohio Railway of the station facilities at Kona, owned and maintained by the latter company, for which the carrier pays as rental 6 per cent on a valuation of $900. The rental paid for year ending on date of valuation was $54.
